Blitzer provides extensive and varied exercise sets that check for retention and prepare students for future math courses. The Concept and Vocabulary Checks appear as separate features preceding the Exercise Sets and are a great check on reading comprehension. Preview Exercises at the end of each exercise set prepare students for material in the section ahead.

Some problems review important material from the past and others are designed to get students thinking about concepts that they will soon encounter.

Practice Plus Problems are more challenging problems that test conceptual understanding by requiring students to combine skills and to revisit key concepts in order to solve.

Cumulative Review Exercises at the end of each chapter ensure that students remember previously learned material, keeping the fundamental skills and concepts fresh in their minds as they move on to the next chapter. End-of-chapter tests cover all of the important topics in the chapter, helping students study for the real thing.

Access code is required. Each course includes author-chosen, pre-assigned homework, integrated review questions, and quizzes, to make creating a course even simpler.

MathTalk Videos arefun, application-based videos featuring Andrew Vickers showing students how the math they are learning in Blitzer applies to the real world. Filmed on location in New York City and Boston, these instructional videos have a sense of humor while demonstrating how everyday life is full of math applications and give the students context on why they should care. They will also have an accompanying Instructor Guide and video assessment questions assignable in MyMathLab.

Integrated Review is skill review quizzes that test on prerequisite knowledge and are integrated throughout the Ready to Go MyMathLab course as well as available in the standard MyMathLab course. From these quizzes, each student receives a personalized, just-in-time review assignment, allowing them to refresh forgotten concepts.

Interactive Figures are now available, enabling users to manipulate figures to bring hard-to-convey math concepts to life.

These are also assignable in MyMathLab.

Chapter Test Prep Videos allow students to work through step-by-step solutions to all of the Chapter Test exercises from the textbook. The downloadable Learning Guide begins each chapter with an engaging application and is organized by objective, providing additional examples and exercises for students to work through for greater conceptual understanding and mastery of mathematical topics.

It can also be packaged with the textbook and MyMathLab access code. New to This Edition. Applications and Real-World Data have been incorporated into this revision throughout the chapter and section openers, examples, and exercise sets. Great Question! Chapter Opening and Section-Opening Scenarios are based on an application and revisiting in the course of the chapter or section in examples, exercises and discussions.

Blitzer Bonuses contain a variety of new but optional enrichment essays. Each course includes author-chosen, pre-assigned homework, integrated review questions, and quizzes to make creating a course even simpler. One of the accuracy checkers was a student at Youngstown State University whom we asked to be particularly aware of situations where statements, even though correct, might be misinterpreted by students.

Faculty often use a higher degree of formal rigor and logic than do students, and the mathematical vocabulary that faculty use is not always familiar to students. We wanted to be sure that this book is truly clear to the intended audience but uses the mathematically precise statements that students will see in calculus.

This worked well in the third edition and has been enhanced in this edition. There is an important pedagogical reason for adopting the four-color format used in this book.

Our major theme is to emphasize the problem-solving strategy of breaking new and difficult problems into a series of smaller, less difficult, and more familiar problems. This is particularly the case in our approach to graphing. We consistently construct a small collection of functions whose graphs it is essential to know. Then we illustrate how techniques such as scaling, translation, and reflection can be used to construct graphs of many other functions.

Having a variety of colors permits us to make the individual steps much clearer. We have consistently shown the base graphs in cyan, the first translation in red, and the next in yellow. Our students have found this to be a natural color transition. It permits them to better see precisely how the final graph is constructed and shows that each individual step is not complex.

The artist and the production editor have spent many hours creating what they feel is the best choice of colors to distinguish the various graphs, taking into consideration even seemingly minor details that we, as authors, would not have considered.

Aside from the graphs, you will see very little other use of color in the book. It is used only where it adds to the understanding of the material or helps in the highlighting of important topics.

RELEVANCE Beginning with the first edition of PreCalculus, our primary goal was to present the essential concepts and techniques needed for a head start in calculus in a package that permitted instructors and students to cover the essential material in one term.

The material had to be presented in a manner that was user friendly and easily read by students Copyright Cengage Learning. We have remained dedicated to and consistent with these goals.

Although we have added new applications and exercises where we and our advisors felt they were needed, we have not substantially changed the length of the text. The essential concepts and techniques have remained basically unchanged. The new material has been added to enhance and often clarify this material and to further emphasize the relevance of mathematics.

We have found that this material is particularly useful for students with a nontraditional background and those who have been away from mathematics for a while. The format of the material in the Guide is similar to that of the book. We have written all of this material ourselves so there will be no transition problems from the text to the Guide, which can be the case when the supplemental material is not written by the authors of the textbook.

We realize that the cost for text material can be a hardship for students, so we have included a PDF file of the first chapter of the Student Study Guide on our website.

This permits students to determine if the Guide is sufficiently useful for them. Also included in the Student Study Guide are two copies of an examination that students can take to test their readiness for precalculus and for calculus. We expect that students will be successful in a precalculus course based on this book if they score 16 or higher on the question test before taking the precalculus course.

Students will be well prepared for a university calculus sequence if they score 30 or higher after they take the precalculus course.

We suggest that students try one of the examinations before taking their precalculus course and the other after completing it, and we predict that they will see a significant improvement.

This allows flexibility while keeping the core material at a reasonable length. We hope you have a productive and pleasant experience with PreCalculus, Fifth Edition.

If you have any suggestions that will help us improve your experience, please do not hesitate to contact us at the e-mail addresses listed at the end of this Preface. We would particularly like to thank the following individuals for their helpful advice on this and past editions. We are grateful for the time and effort that they took to ensure the accuracy of this material.

To the Student In a short time you will be taking a course in calculus, an exciting subject that has applications in every quantitative discipline. Calculus provides a systematic way to describe how a change in one quantity affects another.

Engineers use calculus to determine how the forces of wind and water affect the stability of a structure, how heat and fluids flow, how current affects various electronic devices, and so many other applications that they are too numerous to list. Scientists use calculus to study issues such as population problems, the effect of toxic substances on the environment, and the rates of chemical reactions. In business, the growth of the economy is determined with methods based on calculus, and future trends are predicted.
